March Madness: How Would AI (ChatGPT) Fill In The 2025 Bracket?
This year, ActionNetwork.com has decided to use ChatGPT to see how AI would fill out the 2025 Men’s March Madness bracket.
At first, ChatGPT was “fed” key information regarding this year’s March Madness teams which gave AI enough information to make reasonable predictions for filling out the 2025 March Madness bracket.
According to AI, Auburn, Florida, Duke & Houston are predicted to make the final four, and Duke is predicted to win the 2025 championship.
ActionNetwork.com’s spokesperson comments:
“By using advanced AI analysis, the 2025 March Madness bracket was filled out based on key team data, including historical records, seeding, player performance, and recent momentum. Duke emerged as the top choice, backed by a dominant 19-1 win-loss record this season, a stifling defense that held opponents to just 61.9 PPG, and a stellar 11-game win streak. Duke also boasts a powerful offense, averaging 82.7 PPG. With last year’s Elite 8 experience and a well-rounded, high-performing roster, according to AI, Duke is the most statistically sound pick to win it all.”

METHODOLOGY
As mentioned before, ChatGPT was “fed” key information regarding this year’s March Madness teams which gave AI enough information to make reasonable predictions for filling out the 2025 March Madness bracket.
Specifically, ChatGPT was given:
- Current season’s team records: Win-loss totals for each team.
- Team seedings: The official tournament seeds for each team.
- Basic offensive and defensive stats: Points scored and Opponent points per game for each team.
- Conference affiliation: Which conference each team belongs to.
- Last year’s tournament performance: How far each team advanced in the previous year’s March Madness (if they participated).
- Key player information: The top scorer and rebounder for each team & their stats.
- Coach experience: Number of years the head coach has been coaching.
- Recent momentum: Each team’s record in their last 10 games.
- The tournament bracket: The actual matchups for the first round.
After that, based on the first round matchups, each teams’ data was given to ChatGPT one by one, moving from Round of 64 to Round of 32, followed by Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4 and finally, the National Championship Game.
Based on the answers given by AI, the entire bracket was filled in, which can be seen above.
Having said that, ChatGPT provided us with detailed justifications for its choices, which were kept. In total, ChatGPT gave us 85 pages and 18,000 words’ worth of matchup-by-matchup explanations, presented one by one here: March Madness: How Would AI Fill In The 2025 Bracket?
