Man Charged with Attempted Murder in Shooting of Baltimore County Police Officer

A 27-year-old Baltimore man accused of shooting a Baltimore County Police officer last week has been charged with attempted murder, authorities announced Monday evening.
Andrew Britt faces two counts of first-degree attempted murder, one count of assault, and additional charges, according to online court records.
The shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in the parking lot of the Baltimore County Police Department Wilkens Precinct in Catonsville. Authorities say Britt opened fire, striking an officer in the abdomen. Officers nearby returned fire, wounding Britt in the legs. Both were hospitalized, and the injured officer was released from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Sunday.

According to charging documents, Britt initially entered the precinct lobby and spoke with an officer at a desk for several minutes. He then moved to the parking lot, where he engaged in conversation with an officer refueling his vehicle. Moments later, Britt allegedly walked up to the officer and fired at him. That officer was not hit and took cover behind a parked vehicle. Authorities have not specified when the injured officer was struck.
Three officers, including the one who was shot, drew their weapons during the incident, but only two fired. Per department protocol, those two officers—identified by their last names, Smith and Wright—have been placed on administrative leave. Smith has 25 years of experience, while Wright has two.
Police Chief Robert McCullough stated that the attack appeared to be premeditated but did not provide further details. Baltimore County Police officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday evening.
Britt, a teacher at Liberty Elementary School in Central Forest Park since December 2022, is currently on leave. He remains in custody without bond and has a hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. No attorney was listed for him in online court records as of Monday evening.
