A class action lawsuit was proposed against Girl Scouts claiming their cookies contained heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxins.
The lawsuit cities a study by “Moms Across America” and “GMO Science.” In the study, they found that 100% of the cookies that were tested contained toxins. One thing to mention is that the study was based on a small sample size of 25 cookies across the states.
A New York women was the one who filed the lawsuit in federal court on Monday. The study was not peer-reviewed or published in a scientific journal. The lawsuit is seeking $5 million in damages for people who bought cookies across the United States. It also calls for the cookie sellers to disclose the substances on their packaging.
The Girl Scouts of America responded to the allegations on a blog post last month stating the cookies are safe to seat and are manufactured in line with all food safety regulations. They also added that heavy metals occur naturally in soil where trace amounts are not a safety issue. The Girl Scouts have not commented on the class action lawsuit.
