Violent crime in Washington, D.C., has significantly decreased in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to data shared by U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves. As of this year, the city has recorded 3,388 violent crime cases—a 35% decline from the 5,215 cases reported by this time in 2023.

Graves attributed much of the violence to “several hundred individuals” across the city, many of whom are associated with neighborhood-based groups referred to locally as “crews.” These crews are often involved in various criminal activities, including fueling open-air drug markets, which Graves described as “magnets for violence.”

“Their activities, in some ways, are directly engaged in violence,” Graves said. “Going after those individuals who account for a disproportionate share of violent crimes is an incredibly effective strategy for bringing the numbers down.” Violent crime statistics include offenses such as homicide, sexual assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, robbery, and burglary.
