Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has urged Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano to resign after the rape of a woman on the W&OD Trail in Herndon. The suspect, 31-year-old Denis Humberto Navarette Romero, was reportedly in the U.S. illegally and had a history of arrests before the attack. Despite this, local officials repeatedly released him back into the community. Court documents also reveal that Navarette Romero is receiving public assistance.
The incident has left the Herndon community shaken, with many questioning safety on what was considered a family-friendly trail. Residents gathered for a prayer vigil this week as fear and outrage mounted. Miyares called for legislation requiring local jurisdictions to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, Fairfax County policies currently restrict collaboration with ICE, even for deporting non-citizens who commit violent crimes.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, led by Chair Jeff McKay, and Sheriff Stacey Kincaid have upheld policies banning such cooperation. The case has reignited debates over local immigration enforcement and public safety.
